Septemeber 11th Police Memorial Update- October 2007

The NPDF September 11th Police Memorial is progressing nicely now in its final stage and proposed transfer to the PNC Arts Center, Holmdel NJ. Architects were changed to reasons beyond our control, and it was through the crucial intercession of retired NYS Court Officer and NPDF delegate Joe Zarrelli that James J. Monteforte of Monteforte Architectural Studio was acquired. James is incredibly talented and took it upon himself to draw up six different architectural scenarios for the Board to pick from.  Once one was settled upon, we began to seek steel from the World Trade Center that the monument could be built upon; and that is where we are now.
James is beginning the next stage of the architectural rendition., which is weight and dimension specific, and is quite an undertaking. Donations are still needed to defer the cost of this project as it is considerable to say the least. The NPDF is in the process of seeking a grant for the project from Investors Savings Bank. Let’s hope we are successful.

The NPDF has officially registered with the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office the September 11th Police Memorial, which has been completed by world renowned sculptor Franco Minervini. The statue is a 14 foot wall of Indiana limestone that features a forcefully carved American Flag unfurled like a protective blanket against the twin World Trade Center. To its right, a full length statue of a Police Officer standing at attention with a police dog at his side. It will serve as a memorial to recognize the police heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice on September 11th.

The State of New Jersey has graciously offered to donate to the NPDF an acre of land at the PNC Art Center, Holmdel NJ to house the memorial, which would be adjacent to the Vietnam Memorial. The NPDF will be making the final arrangements for its transfer to the site; however, much work is still needed such as securing the necessary permits, architectural and engineering plans to construct the foundation and site renovations. We implore all members to make a tax-deductible   donation to the September 11th Memorial Fund to help defer future construction costs. Please review the Fundraising Advisory.

Special thanks to New Jersey Turnpike Authority who has agreed to donate a one acre lot and the Joseph Sanzari Construction Company who has graciously donated construction of its foundation and related site renovations.

Much work still needs to be done such as defoliating appropriate areas of the Arts Center for the memorial, lighting, plumbing, building handicapped areas accessible to the monument, paving and sign installation.   Donations are still needed, no matter how small, to continue funding this project. I implore all members to assist in any way they can to make this police memorial one that is worthy of the sacrifice made by the men and women who we seek to honor.
